Everyday Carry While Overlanding
Hey, all you Overlanders! Last weeks blog we talked about Solo Overlanding. We're back on track, and today we're taking our love for the great outdoors one step further: The Everyday Carry for Overlanding! Specifically, we'll focus on our rig of choice—the Jeep Gladiator. So, what exactly are the go-to tools and gear you need for every possible situation? Stick around and let's dig into it!
Why Everyday Carry Matters
Before we dive headlong into this, let’s spend a minute on why having an all-rounded Everyday Carry (EDC) matters. It doesn’t matter if you’re navigating the urban jungle or heading into the wilderness—being prepared is key! The tools you keep in your Jeep Gladiator should cover three essential aspects:
Communication
Emergency Preparedness
Vehicle Maintenance
Communication Tools
Communication is our first port of call. Now, in this world of GMRS and cell phones, it's easy to think you’re covered. But real communication on the overlanding tracks requires tools that go beyond your average smartphone.
Satellite Communicator: Opt for a two-way messaging device with a built-in SOS button. Many models also have navigational capabilities, pre-loaded maps, and compasses. I use the Garmin Tread and I believe these devices are essential for remote trails where cell service is non-existent. Look for models with weather updates and tracking features to share your location with others, ensuring peace of mind during solo adventures.
GMRS Radio: A reliable and easy-to-use option that bridges the gap between urban and off-road communication needs. These radios are invaluable for group trips and staying connected when cell service is unreliable. With a decent range and no need for repeaters in most cases, GMRS radios allow seamless communication between vehicles. Opt for radios with multiple channels and weather alert capabilities to stay informed. I use a wouxun kg-1000g
Handheld Walkie-Talkies: A great backup option for short-range communication. Compact, durable, and easy to carry, walkie-talkies are perfect for coordinating quick activities around camp or during hikes.
Smartphone with Offline Maps: While not a primary tool, having a smartphone loaded with offline maps and apps like Gaia GPS or AllTrails can complement your communication tools. Ensure it’s paired with a power bank to stay charged.
Emergency Gear
Next up, emergency gear—stuff you might never have to use but will thank your lucky stars for if you do. Overlanders know that preparedness can be a lifesaver.
First Aid Kit: Go beyond the basics. Include trauma supplies like tourniquets, quick-clot bandages, and pain relievers. Add items like antiseptic wipes, adhesive bandages, splints, and burn care supplies to address a wider range of injuries.
Multi-Tool: A versatile, compact solution for many on-the-go fixes. Choose one with a knife, pliers, screwdrivers, and scissors to cover various repair needs.
Heavy-Duty Flashlight: Illuminate your surroundings during nighttime repairs or emergencies. Opt for a flashlight with multiple brightness settings and a long-lasting battery. Waterproof and impact-resistant models are ideal for rugged adventures.
Shelter Supplies: Compact survival tents and sleeping bags are must-haves. Consider emergency blankets for additional warmth and weather protection. A tarp and paracord can also serve as a makeshift shelter or repair material.
Fire Extinguisher: Never underestimate the value of this tool in preventing small fires from turning into catastrophes. Choose a compact, vehicle-rated fire extinguisher that’s easily accessible.
Basic Tools: A foldable shovel, an axe, and matches for fire-starting can come in handy in countless scenarios. Add items like a fire starter kit, waterproof matches, and a handsaw for cutting through branches or debris.
Emergency Food and Water: Pack high-energy snacks like protein bars and freeze-dried meals, along with a water filtration system or purification tablets. A collapsible water container can be a lifesaver in arid conditions.
Signaling Devices: Carry a whistle, signal mirror, or flares to attract attention in case of an emergency.
Maintenance & Tools
Maintenance tools are the bread and butter of overlanding. Whether it's a quick fix or a major recovery operation, your Jeep Gladiator should be equipped with:
Vehicle Recovery Kit: Include winch accessories, a high-lift jack, tree trunk protectors, snatch blocks, and recovery straps. These tools can make or break a successful recovery effort. Consider adding a kinetic recovery rope for extra versatility and a pair of high-quality gloves to protect your hands during recovery operations.
Tire Repair Kit: Flat tires are a common challenge. A plug-and-repair kit paired with a portable air compressor will save you time and headaches. Ensure your kit includes valve stem replacements, tire pressure gauges, and patches for comprehensive coverage.
Mechanic Toolset: Stock your rig with socket sets, pry bars, cable ties, and duct tape for on-the-fly repairs. Add items like adjustable wrenches, pliers, a torque wrench, and spare fuses to tackle more complex issues. Including a service manual for your vehicle is also a great idea.
Extra Fuel Storage: A jerry can ensures you won’t run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere. Opt for a durable, leak-proof design and secure it with proper mounting brackets. Consider a siphon pump for easier fuel transfers.
Fluids and Lubricants: Carry extra engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid to top off as needed. Include WD-40 or similar for lubricating stuck parts.
Belts and Hoses: Pack spare belts and hoses specific to your vehicle model, along with the necessary tools to replace them. Broken belts and hoses are a common issue on rough trails.
Jack and Jack Stands: A bottle jack or scissor jack is essential for tire changes. Pair it with sturdy jack stands for added safety when working underneath the vehicle.
Spare Parts: Common spare parts like spark plugs, air filters, and U-joints can be lifesavers during extended trips. Ensure you know how to replace these components or have a repair guide on hand.
Optimizing Storage
So, where do you put all this gear? The Jeep Gladiator’s design is ideal for keeping tools accessible yet secured. Efficient storage not only keeps your essentials organized but also ensures safety while driving over rugged terrain.
Lockable Storage Systems: Use these for smaller, high-value items like tools, radios, and first-aid kits. These systems are perfect for preventing theft and keeping your essentials secure, even when you leave your vehicle unattended.
Roof Racks and Roll Bars: Perfect for bulkier gear that needs to stay secure, such as recovery boards, fuel cans, or even kayaks. Invest in durable tie-down straps and bungee cords to keep items stable during transit.
Cargo Drawers: Ideal for heavier recovery and maintenance tools. Look for modular designs that allow you to customize compartments for tools, spare parts, and emergency kits.
Bed Storage Systems: The Gladiator’s truck bed is a goldmine for storage. Install sliding trays or drawer systems to access your gear easily while maximizing space. Add a bed cover or cap to protect items from weather and theft.
Door Pockets: Reserve these for quick-access essentials like flashlights, multi-tools, or maps. Consider adding custom organizers to keep smaller items from rattling around.
Under-Seat Storage: Use the space under your rear seats for storing less frequently used items like extra clothing, spare batteries, or small toolkits. Add custom bins or organizers to prevent clutter.
Overhead Storage: Install overhead MOLLE panels or nets for lightweight items like hats, gloves, or maps. This space is often underutilized and can be a game-changer for keeping your cabin organized.
Portable Storage Boxes: Keep a few stackable storage boxes for campsite essentials, such as cooking gear or personal items. These can be easily moved from your vehicle to your camp setup.
